Congratulations to Scott who has been training with Coach Leo Dalla for many years. Well deserved and a welcome addition to the Big Brothers Black Belt ranks!
Scott had this to say: “The old jiu jitsu adage, “a black belt is simply a white belt who never quit” is certainly the truth in my case. Or, as Mr Kevin Russo eloquently states, “how much sweat would it be if it was all in one place?”
Upon waking up this morning I was disappointed to find I could not fly to the bathroom. I didn’t have x-ray vision or super-human strength. In fact, as far as I can tell, I have no super powers what-so-ever! So what’s the big deal with this black belt? It didn’t even come with instructions!
I believe the big deal is this: it has nothing to do with the belt itself. In fact, it’s very much like the one I had been wearing, but a little bit darker. The big deal is the amazing journey in getting to this point. This journey has taken me around the world from CT, to Mt Fuji, to DC and Rio de Janero. This journey has provided me “the pleasure” of a torn ACL, torn meniscus, separated shoulder, broken toes, staph infections and some pretty funny looking ears. This journey has taught me strength, humility, and kindness. Most importantly, this journey has allowed me to meet some of the best people in the world. Old friends as far back as Joe Kronen, Paul Reegan, Jeff Ruth, and Dave Kaplan. All of my Big Brothers: Douglas Esposito and the Vanguard crew, Chad Lebraun and the folks at The Lab, David Trader and the MMMA crew, Kelly and his Koa warriors, Vivek and his Pentagon peeps, Nak and his Beta peoples , Jared Weiner, Guy and Noah. My Leo Dalla family: Heavy, Todd, DUI, Ivan, Walt, Armando, Warren, Robinson, Colley, OG Matthews, : Jay, Bud (Silver Back)Kiamie, Isaac, Déjà Vu, the bad-ass Sadr brothers, Shin, Mike Vineyard, Cupcake, Fluffy, Simone, Julio, South Side, Emilio, Baby, Faboa, and Guigo and Tony F. Any and all others I’ve neglected to mention, but have rolled with throughout this journey. And most importantly, my instructor and great friend, Mr Leo Dalla who claims he teaches jiu jitsu, but in reality teaches us how to be a great human beings!
I’m not likely to win the Worlds or any such big tournaments; however, if you’ve ever enjoyed a roll, had a good laugh or learned anything from me, you are part of the knowledge and value held in this belt. I will continue my journey and hope to someday live up to all of the qualities and standards that this belt represents.”
Coach Chad LeBrun, who is the head coach and owner of The Lab in Fredericksburg Virginia, put on a great seminar at Leo Dalla’s Premier Fight Center. He covered self-defense applications for Brazilian jiu-jitsu and chokes. Coach Leo Dalla, who is a fifth degree black belt in Brazilian jiu-jitsu (BJJ) also took the time to recognize Chad’s contributions to the sport and lifestyle of BJJ by promoting him to second degree black belt. This is a significant achievement for Coach LeBrun. The second degree conveys the ability to promote black belts with out the oversight of a senior black belt. Congratulations Chad!
Coach Dalla said that he looks forward to having more of his black belts teach seminars that will be open to members of the Big Brothers Competition Team in the near future.
We would like to wish Efrain Velazquez and his wife a safe trip and all the best in their relocation to Yuma, AZ where he is taking a new job. Efrain has been a great training partner for everybody at Vanguard Gym and all of the Big Brothers Team as he regularly has been rolling at Premier Fight Center and Stafford BJJ. Efrain’s game has grown in leaps and bounds over the last couple years and he has even started innovating his own BJJ game with the “Cat Paw Series”.
Efrain will be staying part of the Big Brothers Team through his affiliation to Vanguard Gym. As he gets settled in, he hopes to be able to start his own BJJ school, and we look forward to his continued successes as a student of BJJ, and to him continuing as part of this team to help him face his future challenges.
You can contact Efrain via his Facebook page, or contact us at Vanguard directly if you need his new phone number or e-mail.
Congratulations to Nak for his double gold as well!!
